What is Sound Masking?
Office noise is a common complaint and noise from overheard speech is a top concern. Lower panel heights, smaller workstation sizes, higher population densities and the trend to move people out of private offices into the open plan all add to an increase in noise levels and creates the need for sound masking. In addition, widespread use of cell phones, speaker phones, teaming environments and shared spaces all contribute to higher noise levels - creating more distractions, increasing stress and limiting productivity.
Everyone in your office needs some level of speech privacy and every employer wants to provide the most productive and optimal work environment. Sound Masking gives you the ability to provide your employees with speech privacy while creating a more comfortable and efficient workplace
Return on investment models show that being attentive to acoustics pays off through increased productivity. Industry case studies have documented improvements ranging from 3-20%. Using even a modest 3% increase, your sound masking investment can pay for itself in well under a year.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions: Your Guide to Sound Masking Solutions
What is sound masking?
Sound masking is the use of specially engineered sound played through speakers installed in or above the ceiling. This sound creates a consistent background noise that makes it harder to hear and understand conversations, helping to reduce distractions and increase privacy.
How does sound masking work?
Sound masking works by producing a unique, digital broad band sound spectrum, complimentary to the speech spectrum, that effectively covers speech levels. Xcore’s Spectra® sound is called E-Sound®. This scientifically engineered sound is amplified through individual speakers installed above or in the ceiling throughout the environment creating a uniform field of sound that ensures temporal and spatial uniformity. The sound masking system “fills” the plenum and filters down into the space below, without phasing, to gently raise the background sound level. This rise in the sound levels covers or “masks” un-wanted office noise. This makes speech less intelligible, creates speech privacy, and results in office environments that are truly comfortable to work in.
Where is sound masking used?
The Spectra® System is used in office, healthcare, financial,
government, legal, religious, military and call center environments. Xcore’s Sound Masking Systems are custom designed to fit a variety of site conditions and applications and are used in open and closed plan offices with or without ceiling tiles. The system is applicable for new construction, retrofits, and designed to meet all local codes. Spectra® can also pro-vide a quality paging and music system with system capabilities that include all call and zone paging as well as an additional life-safety system.
